Popliteal Artery Aneurysm

Treating aneurysms behind the knee to protect the leg.

Overview

What it is

Popliteal artery aneurysms occur behind the knee and can form clots that threaten the leg. They are repaired by stent-graft or open bypass to relieve symptoms and prevent limb-threatening complications.

When it’s recommended

  • Popliteal aneurysm above size threshold or with clot
  • Symptoms of leg ischemia
  • Prevention of limb-threatening complications

How it’s performed

Every plan is individualized and reviewed by our multidisciplinary aortic team.

Imaging and assessment of leg circulation

Open bypass or a covered stent excludes the aneurysm

Blood flow to the leg is restored

Follow-up confirms graft/stent function

Recovery

Recovery & follow-up

Recovery depends on the approach; open bypass requires a longer recovery than endovascular repair.
