Carotid Artery Disease
Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR)
A lower-profile carotid stenting with brain protection.
What it is
TCAR is a minimally invasive carotid procedure that places a stent through a small incision at the base of the neck while temporarily reversing blood flow to protect the brain from debris — a lower-profile option for selected patients.
When it’s recommended
- Carotid narrowing in patients at higher risk for open surgery
- Anatomy suited to transcarotid access
- Need to reduce stroke risk with brain protection
How it’s performed
Every plan is individualized and reviewed by our multidisciplinary aortic team.
A small incision exposes the carotid at the neck base
Blood flow is temporarily reversed to protect the brain
A stent is placed across the narrowing
Normal flow is restored
Recovery & follow-up
A shorter recovery than open surgery for many patients, with follow-up imaging.
Why the Baylor Medicine Center for Aortic Surgery
Complex aortic care is safest in experienced hands. Dr. Oderich and the Center bring more than 7,000 open and endovascular aortic repairs of experience, advanced imaging, and a multidisciplinary team to every case.
