Abdominal & Thoracoabdominal Aorta

Complex Open Aneurysm Repair

Open repair for aneurysms involving the kidney and intestinal arteries.

Overview

What it is

For aneurysms that sit too close to — or involve — the arteries feeding the kidneys and intestines, a standard repair isn’t enough. The aorta is clamped above the kidney arteries and the repair completed quickly to protect those organs, sometimes with small grafts added to restore branch blood flow.

When it’s recommended

  • Juxtarenal or pararenal aneurysms involving branch arteries
  • Anatomy unsuitable for a branched stent-graft
  • Need for a durable open solution in a fit patient

How it’s performed

Every plan is individualized and reviewed by our multidisciplinary aortic team.

Advanced imaging to plan branch-vessel protection

Controlled clamping above the kidney arteries

Graft replacement with reattachment or bypass of key branches

Careful monitoring of organ perfusion

Recovery

Recovery & follow-up

A more demanding operation than standard open repair, with a hospital stay and a recovery measured in several weeks, supported by an experienced aortic team.
